About
Gehenna have spent three decades refusing to stay in one lane. The Norwegian band from Stavanger started in 1993, played the famous Zonen concert that landed them in the cult black metal documentary Det Svarte Alvor, and put out their debut Seen Through the Veils of Darkness in 1995, with Garm of Arcturus and Ulver guesting on the track Vinterriket. Their second album, Malice, was hailed as a prime example of symphonic black metal, shaped by the classical music and straight ahead heavy metal the members actually listened to. Then they swerved. Murder in 2000 leaned toward death metal and split fans, while WW in 2005 went raw and harsh in a way that nodded to Darkthone and Burzum. The lineup has changed constantly, with Sanrabb the steady presence, and on 2013's Unravel he became the sole lead vocalist. The band say the music always comes first, with lyrics added afterward, and they would rather not wear a label at all.
