About
Also known as: Thule
Taake are a Norwegian black metal band from Bergen, and pretty much the definition of a one man vision brought to life. Ørjan Stedjeberg, performing under the name Hoest, writes all the music, handles most of the recording himself, and has kept the band going since 1993, when it first went by the name Thule. All lyrics are written in Hoest's native dialect and printed in Norse runes, and the project sits firmly in the "True Norwegian black metal" tradition, with Hoest explicitly wanting to spark national pride and cultural nostalgia in Norwegian listeners. The band built their reputation on a trilogy of concept albums released between 1999 and 2005, each circling around themes of death, Norway, and the devil in man. Later records like Noregs vaapen pulled in guest appearances from black metal heavyweights including Attila Csihar, Nocturno Culto, and Demonaz, earning a Norwegian Spellemann nomination in the metal category. Taake have stayed prolific over the years, releasing split EPs, compilations, and studio albums well into the 2020s, including their eighth full length Et hav av avstand in 2023.
