About
George Crotty plays jazz on the cello, and he plays it well outside the usual lines. His writing pulls from modal jazz, Indian raga and Arabic maqam, a mix shaped by growing up in Toronto and its crowd of cultures. The trio is completed by John Murchison on bass and Jeremy Smith on percussion, and the three of them share the work more evenly than a standard trio would, with groove and colour treated as equals rather than the cello simply leading the way. Their 2022 album Chronotope blends South American, Arabic, Indian and contemporary jazz ideas, and another record, Heart Music, followed. The group has played festivals including 21C, Small World Music, Copenhagen Vinterjazz and the New Directions Cello Festival, and has taken the music on the road to Toronto, Montreal, New York, Chicago, London and Berlin.
