About

Also known as: Gillan Welch, Gillian Howard Welch, Gillian Welsh

Gillian Welch and her musical partner David Rawlings make music that The New Yorker describes as "at once innovative and obliquely reminiscent of past rural forms", a spare, often dark blend of Appalachian, bluegrass, country and Americana. The duo simply bill themselves as Gillian Welch, and they have built one of the more quietly remarkable bodies of work in American folk and roots music, spanning nine albums between her name, his, and their joint releases. Her debut Revival earned a Grammy nomination, as did Time (The Revelator) and The Harrow and the Harvest, the latter arriving after an eight year gap in recording. Beyond their own records, Welch contributed to the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack, a platinum album that won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 2002, and she even turned up in the film itself. In 2018 she and Rawlings wrote "When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings" for the Coen brothers film The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, earning them an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song. Their 2020 release All the Good Times won the Grammy for Best Folk Album in 2021, and Woodland, released in 2024, won the same award in 2025, making them the only duo to take it more than once.
