Gin Wigmore has one of those voices you don't forget: high pitched and raspy in equal measure, it cuts through whatever genre she's working in, whether that's blues rock, alt rock or pop rock. The Auckland singer and songwriter broke out early when her song "Hallelujah" won the Grand Prize at the International Songwriting Competition in 2004, beating over 11,000 entries from 77 countries to become the youngest and only unsigned winner in the competition's history. Her debut EP went platinum in New Zealand, and she toured with John Mellencamp and Sheryl Crow before releasing her first full album, Holy Smoke, recorded with Ryan Adams' band The Cardinals. Her second album, Gravel & Wine, was shaped by two months travelling through Mississippi and Alabama, and the single "Black Sheep" turned up everywhere from Grey's Anatomy to Wynonna Earp. "Kill of the Night" became a go to for TV placements too, landing in Teen Wolf, Pretty Little Liars and The Umbrella Academy. She has released five albums in total, with the first three all topping the New Zealand Albums Chart. In 2020 she dropped the track "H B I C", showing she is still very much in the game.
