About
Also known as: Gine Vanelli, Gino Vanelli, Gino Vanneli
Gino Vannelli's biggest hit started with a stunt: he and his brother Joe waited for hours outside A&M Studios in Los Angeles, then he sprinted at Herb Alpert with a demo tape while security gave chase. It worked. Alpert signed him, and the Montreal born singer went on to build a run of 1970s and 80s hits, including "People Gotta Move", "I Just Wanna Stop" (a number 4 on Billboard and a Grammy nominee), "Living Inside Myself" and "Wild Horses". His sound never stayed in one lane. Pauper in Paradise mixed prog rock, jazz and symphonic sounds with the London Philharmonic, and later he turned to acoustic jazz and even classical. One song written for his late father reached Pope John Paul II, who asked to hear it at the Vatican, which led to the album Canto. He's collected several Juno Awards along the way, and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2025.
