Jerry Joiner makes music under the name Girlfriends, and his entire studio output is a single self released debut album from 2009, recorded when he was 17 and played entirely by himself. That record blends shouted vocals and math rock guitar work with electronic synths and a surprisingly funky, jazzy energy. Reviewers have pointed to twinkling guitars, clattering drums, and thick synths sitting underneath lyrics that swing between poetic oddness and blunt humor. The song "New Computers" found a whole new audience via TikTok in 2025, which prompted Joiner to put out an EP of alternate versions of the track. He has teased new music over the years, but for now that one debut remains the full Girlfriends catalog.
