About
Glass Beams is the brainchild of Indian Australian multi instrumentalist Rajan Silva, who built the whole project from the ground up in Melbourne during the COVID 19 lockdowns of 2020. Silva plays, records, produces, and mixes everything himself, weaving Eastern musical traditions into contemporary Western sounds for something that sits in its own distinct space. The results speak for themselves: the 2024 EP Mahal, released on Ninja Tune, landed at number 5 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Albums chart. Live or on screen, the band is instantly recognisable by the gold bejewelled glass masks the members wear at every public appearance, turning each performance into something closer to a ritual. The debut EP Mirage came out in 2021, and Mahal built on that foundation with wider reach and a label behind it. Silva is primarily a drummer, which gives the music a rhythmic core that sets it apart from most acts working in the psychedelic and instrumental folk space.
