About
Also known as: Live DZ
Gnawa Diffusion blend gnawa, reggae, raï, punk and rock into something that doesn't sit comfortably in any single box, which is probably exactly the point. Based in Grenoble, the group formed around frontman Amazigh Kateb, son of celebrated Algerian writer and poet Kateb Yacine, and they've been at it since 1993 when they dropped their debut album Légitime différence. Their lyrics move across Algerian Arabic, Tamazight, French and English, and they're not shy about subject matter: poverty, government corruption, imperialism and self determination all get their turn. That political edge has done nothing to dull their popularity across Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia and France. Their 1999 release Bab el Oued Kingston remains a landmark in their catalogue, and with Rwina arriving in 2025, they're clearly still pushing forward.
