Few bands from the Massachusetts rock scene hit as hard or as consistently as Godsmack. Formed in Lawrence in 1995 around frontman Sully Erna, the group built their early buzz on local radio before Universal/Republic Records signed them in 1998 and turned their self released debut into a certified phenomenon, eventually going 5x platinum. Their sound sits firmly in the heavy end of alternative metal and hard rock, and it has kept them on major stages ever since, including multiple Ozzfest runs and arena tours of their own. Twenty five top ten rock radio hits, twelve of them at number one, tell the story pretty efficiently. Three consecutive Billboard 200 number one albums, Faceless, IV and The Oracle, cemented their status as one of the most reliable acts in American hard rock. Boston even declared August 6 Godsmack Day in their honor. Their ninth studio album, Lighting Up the Sky, arrived in 2023, and the band continues with Erna alongside bassist Robbie Merrill, lead guitarist Sam Koltun and drummer Mike Mangini.
