About
Also known as: Faiqə Atəşin, Gougoush, Ququş, فائقه آتشین, گوگوش
Googoosh is the rare pop star whose haircut became a national trend. In 1970s Iran, women copied her miniskirts and her short cut, nicknamed the "Googooshi", while her records ran from upbeat, traditional tinged pop to big emotional ballads about love and loss, sometimes compared to the chanson of Edith Piaf. She also starred in over 25 films, one of which became the most commercially successful Iranian movie of its time. Then the 1979 revolution hit, and she stayed in Tehran, banned from performing for more than two decades. A new generation found her music through bootleg recordings. In 2000 she left Iran and came back to the stage with a comeback tour that opened to a sold out crowd of over 12,000 in Toronto and later reached Madison Square Garden, Royal Albert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl. She has recorded in languages from Persian to Spanish, and released the album Ejaz in 2012.
