About

Also known as: Graham Parker & The Shot, Graham Thomas Parker

Graham Parker built his reputation as one of the sharpest singer songwriters to emerge from the British pub rock scene of the mid 1970s, fronting Graham Parker & the Rumour alongside veterans of Brinsley Schwarz, Ducks Deluxe and other bands of that era. His debut album Howlin Wind, produced by Nick Lowe and released in 1976, announced a raw, soulful sound that drew on rock, reggae and R&B, with Parker's rough edged vocals giving songs like Don't Ask Me Questions and Soul Shoes an intensity that made the band one of the UK's best live acts. He is often mentioned alongside Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson as a defining figure of the new wave generation, though Parker got there first. After parting ways with the Rumour in 1980, Parker kept writing and releasing records steadily, scoring critical praise for Squeezing Out Sparks and continuing to put out work on smaller labels when the major deals dried up. He even turned up in the 2012 film This Is 40, playing a version of himself. More recent uploads under his name suggest he has kept active, with tracks like Nixon's Rules appearing as late as 2019.
