Grand Belial's Key have spent over three decades as one of the most polarising acts in American black metal. Founded in Oakton, Virginia in 1992 by guitarist Gelal Necrosodomy, the band built a reputation for confrontational lyrics and a sound that deliberately distanced itself from the Norwegian template, favouring thicker, bass heavy mixes and a raw underground feel. Their debut full length Mocking the Philanthropist was enough to get them banned from distribution in Germany and cost them their label, which folded after Rough Trade refused to carry it. Their catalogue spans four albums, from the controversial Judeobeast Assassination to 2005's Kosherat, which threw in re recorded EP tracks and a pair of Chaos 88 covers. After years of scattered activity, lineup shifts, and a cancelled Dublin gig that made headlines, the band returned with Kohanic Charmers in 2022, released through Gelal's own label Weltenfeind. It marked the recorded debut of vocalist Sven Unhold Zimper, who had been fronting the live lineup since 2009.
