Grand Funk Railroad built one of the most devoted arena rock followings of the 1970s out of sheer volume and relentless touring, all while critics largely ignored them. Formed in Flint, Michigan by Mark Farner, Don Brewer, and Mel Schacher, the trio modelled themselves on hard rock power groups like Cream and quickly outgrew their influences. By 1971 they had sold out Shea Stadium in 72 hours, a faster sell out than the Beatles managed at the same venue. Their catalog stacks up impressively too: six platinum and seven gold albums, with hits including "We're an American Band", "I'm Your Captain", and a cover of "The Loco Motion" that became a genuine smash. The band recorded their final album of that golden era, "Good Singin' Good Playin'", with Frank Zappa producing, before splitting in 1976. They have reunited at various points since, and after Farner's departure in 1998, Brewer and Schacher have kept the band on the road, eventually bringing in former Kiss guitarist Bruce Kulick to fill out the lineup.
