Grandaddy built their sound in home studios in Modesto, California, and that lo fi, bedroom quality became central to their identity rather than a limitation. Frontman Jason Lytle did the heavy lifting on most recordings, blending indie rock with electronic textures and a kind of melancholy that earned The Sophtware Slump comparisons to Radiohead's OK Computer. That 2000 album cracked the UK top 40 and pulled in fans like David Bowie and Liv Tyler, while the single "A.M. 180" later found a second life in the film 28 Days Later and a string of TV shows. The band split in 2006 before reforming in 2012, eventually releasing their fifth album Last Place in 2017, though the sudden death of bassist Kevin Garcia following a stroke that same year put the band on indefinite hold. Lytle then revived the Grandaddy name in 2024 to put out a sixth studio album, Blu Wav, keeping the project alive even as its lineup and circumstances have shifted dramatically over the decades.
