Grandmaster Flash basically invented the toolkit that hip hop is built on. Working out of the Bronx in the 1970s, Joseph Saddler developed the Quick Mix Theory, a fingertip technique that let him loop drum breaks indefinitely by switching between two copies of the same record. That work gave birth to cutting, scratching, and punch phrasing, and along the way he invented the slipmat, that felt disc that every DJ in the world now uses without thinking twice. He founded Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, who scored a landmark 1982 hit with The Message, widely regarded as the first hip hop record with a serious social conscience. The group became the first hip hop act inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007. In 2019 Flash became the first hip hop artist to receive the Polar Music Prize, cementing a legacy that stretches well beyond any single record or technique.
