About
Also known as: Gretchen Daniel, Gretchen P. Daniel
Gretchen Peters has spent decades writing some of country music's most emotionally bruising songs, and the names she wrote them for read like a hall of fame roll call: Martina McBride, Etta James, George Strait, Shania Twain, Trisha Yearwood, Neil Diamond, and more. Her song "Independence Day" earned her the Country Music Association Award for Song of the Year, and in 2014 she was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. The Academy of Country Music followed that up with their Poet's Award in 2021, recognizing her longstanding impact on the genre. As a solo artist she has put out fourteen studio albums, starting with 1996's The Secret of Life. Her own writing leans into dark territory: murder, loneliness, domestic violence, PTSD. It's heavy stuff delivered with a folk country sensibility that keeps it from ever feeling gratuitous. She has stepped back from full touring, completing a UK farewell run in 2023, but she continues to write and record.
