Winning not one but two major songwriting competitions in the same year is a hell of a way to announce yourself. In 2016, Melbourne's Gretta Ray took out both the Triple J Unearthed High competition and the Vanda & Young Global Songwriting Competition with her song "Drive", earning serious airplay and a reputation as someone to watch. Her early work leaned into indie folk territory, but she shifted toward a fuller pop sound on her debut album Begin to Look Around, which landed at number 13 on the ARIA Charts. Critics have praised her writing style as "conversational, unambiguous" and "quietly grand pop", which pretty much nails it. Her second album Positive Spin arrived in 2023, preceded by singles including "Heartbreak Baby", which picked up a Song of the Year nomination at the APRA Awards. The record also features vocal contributions from Maisie Peters and Carol Ades on the track "America Forever". A deluxe edition followed in 2024, adding reworked tracks and a collaboration with Japanese Wallpaper. Ray has also proven herself a capable live presence, having opened for Gang of Youths on their Australian arena run and even duetting with frontman David Le'aupepe during the shows.
