About
Hail the Sun pull off something that sounds chaotic on paper but clicks perfectly in practice: Donovan Melero sings and drums simultaneously, and his vocal style draws frequent comparisons to Anthony Green of Circa Survive. The Chico, California post hardcore group blend progressive rock, math rock, screamo and emo into a sound that's technically demanding without ever feeling cold. Their 2016 album Culture Scars landed at number 38 on the Billboard Top Rock Albums chart and tackled some genuinely dark subject matter, exploring the trauma hidden inside things society treats as normal. The 2017 EP Secret Wars pushed the heaviness and technical complexity even further, earning the band a lot of new attention. Over the years they've shared stages with Dance Gavin Dance, Circa Survive and Silverstein, and played festivals including Swanfest and the Vans Warped Tour. Their sixth album Divine Inner Tension arrived in 2023, notable for being the first where Melero didn't track the drums himself in the studio. A seventh album is already in the works.
