Ingebrigt Håker Flaten is a Norwegian bassist from Oppdal who has spent decades at the heart of some of the most adventurous jazz being made anywhere. His work spans free jazz, fusion, and everything in between, with a discography that runs to well over forty albums and collaborators ranging from Ken Vandermark and Joe McPhee to Bugge Wesseltoft and Neneh Cherry. He logged serious time with Wesseltoft's New Conceptions of Jazz, sharing stages with John Scofield and Joshua Redman along the way, and has been a key member of groups like Atomic, The Thing, and the Scorch Trio. Flaten's solo album Double Bass came out in 2003, and he picked up the Kongsberg Jazz Award in 2004. He also contributes to Ola Kvernberg's Spellemannprisen winning record Liarbird. On top of all that, he runs the Sonic Transmissions Festival in Austin, Texas, an annual event dedicated to hybrid free jazz forms.
