half•alive built their sound around something genuinely unusual: a refusal to lean on computer generated sounds, opting instead for live instruments even in performance. The Long Beach indie pop trio got their first real wave of attention with the 2018 single "still feel.", a track whose choreography heavy video turned heads at NPR, Alternative Press, Rock Sound and Triple J all at once. It sold over a million copies and landed at number seven on the Alternative Airplay chart, which led to the band signing with RCA Records. Their debut album Now, Not Yet followed in 2019 and peaked at number 15 on Billboard's Top Alternative Albums chart. The band's aesthetic runs through everything, from the music videos they choreograph themselves to orchestral reimaginings of their own songs on the 2020 EP In Florescence. Vocalist Josh Taylor also directs the visuals, giving half•alive a cohesive artistic identity that goes well beyond the music alone.
