Formed in Gouda in 2009, Handsome Poets quickly built a reputation as one of the more promising Dutch indie pop acts of their era. Their debut single Blinded got picked up by national radio stations and earned them the 3FM Serious Talent title, setting the tone for a string of radio hits to follow. Dance (The War Is Over) was named a 3FM Megahit, and their self titled debut album reached number 13 on the Mega Top 50. The single Sky on Fire became their biggest moment yet, hitting number 1 on the Mega Top 50 and landing on playlists at Radio 538, Qmusic and Sky Radio. It was used as an anthem for NOS coverage during the London Olympics, and later appeared in the 2016 film The Edge of Seventeen starring Hailee Steinfeld and Woody Harrelson. A third album, 2015, followed, and their single Make It Better eventually racked up over 8.6 million streams on Spotify, earning the band a Gold record.
