About
Hanni El Khatib makes the kind of rock that feels simultaneously ancient and urgent, drawing on 60s soul, doo wop, surf music and blues while keeping things raw enough to feel genuinely dangerous. His 2013 album Head in the Dirt, recorded in three weeks at Dan Auerbach's Nashville studio, landed him in Rolling Stone as 'desert burned blues rock boosted by punk, soul and hip hop.' The Guardian once summed him up as a former skate punk keeping 'the spirit of 76 alive with his primal raunch and roll,' which honestly isn't far off. Based between San Francisco and Los Angeles, El Khatib is also co owner and visual director of independent label Innovative Leisure. His third album Moonlight arrived in 2015, built largely on instruments he played himself, with a Wu Tang Clan remix of the title track featuring GZA. His music has landed in commercials for Nike, Apple and Levi's, and on TV shows ranging from Suits to Californication to the BBC series Luther.
