Harriet Tubman is a New York trio that treats jazz as a launchpad rather than a rulebook. Bassist Melvin Gibbs, guitarist Brandon Ross and percussionist J.T. Lewis started the band in 1998 and took its name from the abolitionist. What comes out is a mix of electronic jazz, rock and funk, with a good dose of dub in the low end. The records tell the story. They opened with I Am a Man in 1998 and followed it with Prototype in 2000, then went quiet for over a decade before Ascension arrived in 2011, which landed on PopMatters' Best Jazz of 2011 list. Araminta came in 2017 with trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith guesting, and The Terror End of Beauty in 2018 made No Depression's list of the year's best jazz albums. Their latest, Electrical Field of Love, teams them up with Georgia Anne Muldrow.
