About
Few conductors have done as much for Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach as Hartmut Haenchen. The Dresden born conductor spent decades championing the composer, leading the Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach Chamber Orchestra in Berlin from 1980 to 2014 and racking up a string of Deutsche Schallplattenpreis wins for his C.P.E. Bach recordings on Capriccio. His discography runs to well over 130 CDs and DVDs, covering everything from Haydn symphonies to complete Wagner Ring cycles. His biggest institutional role came in 1986, when he took over as music director of De Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam and chief conductor of the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra. Under his watch, the company built a reputation for tight ensemble work and adventurous stagings, with Haenchen steering a wide repertoire that stretched from Mozart and Strauss to Bartók and Puccini. He resigned in 2002 to protest budget cuts, but his relationship with the orchestra never really ended. In March 2023 he was appointed their honorary conductor.
