Heartless Bastards got their name from a bar trivia game that listed "Tom Petty and the Heartless Bastards" as a fake answer about Tom Petty's backing band. Frontwoman Erika Wennerstrom thought it was hilarious, and the name stuck. The Cincinnati rock band was picked up by Fat Possum Records in 2004 after Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney passed along their demo, and their debut Stairs and Elevators earned them serious praise from Rolling Stone and The Village Voice. Wennerstrom is the only constant member through six albums and a shifting lineup, and the band's sound has evolved considerably along the way. Their third album The Mountain brought in violin, banjo, mandolin and steel guitar, while Arrow, produced by Spoon drummer Jim Eno, cracked the top 100 in the US. Their sixth album A Beautiful Life, released in 2021 on their own Sweet Unknown Records label, was something of a full circle moment for Wennerstrom, who saw it as a continuation of everything started on that debut nearly two decades earlier.
