About
Maarten Heijmans and Xander Vrienten found each other through their shared love of American southern music while working together on the musical Hadestown. That connection grew into a full project called Wachten op de dood, where they explore how close the worlds of folk, blues, jazz and Dutch kleinkunst actually are. The common ground turns out to be pretty fertile: both traditions circle around loss, longing and the small tragedies of everyday life, stories about ordinary people and their fate, delivered with sharp lines and a healthy dose of irony. The duo positions itself somewhere between the Jordaan and the Mississippi, blending the piano led sensibility of Dutch chanson with the guitar driven grit of New Orleans, Nashville and Memphis. They back it all with a full band, and the whole thing works because neither tradition is treated as a costume. The humour and the darkness sit side by side, which is pretty much what kleinkunst and the blues have always had in common.
