About
Hellbastard may have literally given crust punk its name. The Newcastle band's 1986 demo tape, Ripper Crust, is widely credited as the origin of the genre's label, which tells you something about how foundational they are. Formed in 1984 with a vision of blending Crass style politics with the sonic brutality of Slayer, they became a touchstone for both crust punk and the crossover thrash scene, and their 1990 album Natural Order on Earache Records cemented that reputation. After years of dormancy, founding vocalist and guitarist Scruff Lewty reformed the band in 2007, taking them through runs of American and European tours. The catalogue they have built spans demos, LPs and splits across four decades, with releases like The Need to Kill, Feral, and a 2019 revisit to early material keeping things active. Back in 2018, the band was reportedly working on new material they described as vicious and different, which sounds about right for a group that has never really softened its edges.
