About
Hindi Zahra flipped her own birth name to create her stage name, which is a neat hint at how she operates: taking something familiar and remaking it into something distinctly her own. The Moroccan singer, originally from Khouribga, blends folk pop, indie folk and soul jazz in a style that draws comparisons to Billie Holiday, Norah Jones and Beth Gibbons of Portishead. Her influences range from Algerian legend Cheikha Rimitti to Egyptian icon Umm Kulthum, and that breadth shows in her music. Most of her songs are in English, though she also sings in the Berber Shilha language. She is a self taught multi instrumentalist who had written around 50 songs before her 2009 debut EP. Her first full album came out on Blue Note Records in 2010 and won both the Prix Constantin and the Victoires de la Musique award for best World music album. Beyond music, she has taken on film roles, appearing in Tala Hadid's The Narrow Frame of Midnight and Fatih Akin's The Cut in 2014. Her second album, Homeland, followed in 2015.
