Hippo Campus pull from a pretty specific set of influences, UK and Australian acts like Little Comets, Bombay Bicycle Club, and King Krule, which gives their Saint Paul, Minnesota indie rock a distinct transatlantic texture. Their debut full length Landmark from 2017 was a guitar driven record the Minneapolis Star Tribune called "loaded with thickly cushioned ambiance, billowy melodies and concisely written songs," and it landed at number three on the Billboard Heatseeker chart. Produced by BJ Burton, the same person behind records for Bon Iver and Low, it announced them as a serious outfit. Their follow up Bambi pushed further into synthesizers and programmed drums, with the Boston Globe calling it "a massive step forward." They have played Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, and Reading and Leeds, and headlined sold out shows at Minneapolis institution First Avenue. Most recently they released LP3 in early 2022, then pivoted with the Wasteland EP in 2023, a country tinged five tracker that Dork described as hurtling the band in an unexpected but exciting direction.
