About
Hoba Hoba Spirit have been shaking up Morocco's rock scene since forming in Casablanca in 1998, blending rock, reggae, and gnawa into what they call 'hayha', a word that basically means beautiful chaos. Their lyrics flip between Darija, French, and English, and they tackle the kind of disorientation that young Moroccans know well, politically, socially, and personally. It's a sound that's hard to pin down and easy to get hooked on. Their 2007 album Trabando is probably their biggest moment so far, scooping three Maghreb Music Awards including best album and best fusion artist. The record featured 'Goulou Bazz', a collab with Moroccan rapper Bigg that landed as a genuine hit. Since 2003 they've become a fixture at Morocco's major festivals, from Mawazine in Rabat to the Gnaoua and World Music Festival in Essaouira, and their catalog has kept growing, with the album Kamayanbaghi arriving in 2018.
