Few bands from the 1990s moved units like Hootie & the Blowfish. Their debut album Cracked Rear View, out in 1994, went platinum 22 times in the United States and made them one of the best selling acts of that decade, powered by three Top 10 singles: "Hold My Hand", "Let Her Cry", and "Only Wanna Be with You". The Columbia, South Carolina quartet stood out partly because their warm, melodic rock sound was so far removed from the grunge dominating radio at the time that other labels passed on them before Atlantic signed them in 1993. They kept things going with Fairweather Johnson in 1996, the same year they picked up Grammys for Best New Artist and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. Three more studio albums followed before the band went on hiatus in 2008. They came back in 2019 with Imperfect Circle, their first new studio album in fourteen years, proving there was still plenty of appetite for what Hootie & the Blowfish do best.
