About

Also known as: Hohouse Flowers, Hot House Flowers

When Rolling Stone called Hothouse Flowers the best unsigned band in Europe, the Dublin outfit were still busking on the streets. That rep got Bono's attention, and a deal through U2's Mother Records quickly followed. Their debut album People, released in 1988, hit number one in Ireland within a week and climbed to number two on the UK Albums Chart, making it the most successful debut album in Irish history. A music video aired during the interval of the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest pushed the single Don't Go to number eleven in the UK, their highest ever chart position there. The band blends traditional Irish music with soul, gospel, and rock in a way that felt genuinely distinctive. Their second album Home reached number one in Australia, and they collaborated with everyone from the Indigo Girls to Def Leppard along the way. After splitting in 1994 and reforming in 1998, they released Born and a self released live record. They have kept going since, mixing sporadic touring with solo projects.
