About
HTRK started out making noise heavy, guitar driven music inspired by David Lynch films, protopunk and post industrial ideas, with vocalist Jonnine Standish's haunted, brazenly sexual lyrics setting them apart from everything else happening in Australia at the time. Their debut album Marry Me Tonight was produced by Rowland S. Howard and spent years tied up in a rights dispute before finally landing in 2009 to strong UK press reception. The band shifted significantly after the death of bassist Sean Stewart in 2010, moving away from cold industrial textures toward something more sensual and atmospheric. That evolution carried through Work (Work, Work), Psychic 9 5 Club, Venus in Leo, which includes a cover of Missy Elliott's Hit Em wit da Hee, and Rhinestones in 2021, their first album to chart in Australia. Pitchfork heard that last record as a subterranean Everything But the Girl trading minimal wave roots for gothic country detours. Now a duo of Standish and guitarist Nigel Yang, HTRK have been recording from a studio in the Dandenong Ranges outside Melbourne.
