About
Ibibio Sound Machine built their sound around a collision of West African funk and disco, post punk, and electro, and the results are hard to pin down in the best possible way. The London band grew out of a production project aimed at fusing 1980s afrobeat with 1990s drum and bass, and when vocalist Eno Williams joined and live musicians were added, including Ghanaian guitar legend Alfred Bannerman of Osibisa, the thing really took shape. Williams draws lyrics from Ibibio folk stories passed down by her mother, weaving them into contemporary themes. Their 2022 album Electricity, produced by Hot Chip, brought them wider attention, with Pitchfork and The Guardian both singing its praises, and Clash Music calling it "bright, buoyant, and continually innovative." They kept the momentum going with Pull the Rope in 2024, and have another record, Chopping Mountain, lined up on Merge Records.
