About
Also known as: Aoba Ichiko, Ichiko Aoba
Ichiko Aoba makes music that feels like standing very still in a forest just before something shifts. The Japanese folk singer and guitarist has built a quietly devoted following around her dream like acoustic sound, layered with field recordings and an intimacy that her collaborator ZAK of Fishmans helped shape. She plays guitar, piano, clarinet, accordion, and flute, and that range shows up in work that stretches from delicate folk to ambient textures. Her 2020 album Windswept Adan, released on her own Hermine label, drew on the landscapes of the Ryukyu island chain, and her 2024 follow up Luminescent Creatures continued from that same place, this time rooted in Hateruma, the southernmost island in the chain. Along the way she has worked with Ryuichi Sakamoto, Cornelius, Haruomi Hosono, and Mac DeMarco, composed the award winning soundtrack for the 2022 film Amiko, and contributed an arrangement to the Nintendo Switch remake of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening.
