About

Also known as: llja Reijngoud

Ilja Reijngoud is a Dutch jazz trombonist, composer and arranger from Leiden whose playing spans a remarkable range of projects, from bebop to Scandinavian jazz to arrangements built around Shakespeare sonnets. That Shakespeare project, realised with vocalist Fay Claassen, earned an Edison award. His 2015 album Goldie Meets Silver paid tribute to pianist Horace Silver, and earlier work with vocalist Elizabeth Simonian blended Greek and Armenian traditional music with Nordic jazz influences. He has appeared on more than a hundred albums, including a Grammy winning Metropole Orkest recording with Ivan Lins, and spent years as a regular in André Hazes's backing band. In 2003 he picked up a Thelonious Monk Award for his composition No Substitute. As an educator he co founded the trombone department at Rotterdam's Codarts conservatory, now the largest trombone programme in Europe, and conducts its big band at the North Sea Jazz Festival each year.
