Few metal bands have Maria Brink's ability to shift from a delicate melody to an all out scream in the same breath, and that vocal tension is exactly what made In This Moment stand out from the Los Angeles metal scene they emerged from in 2005. Their debut, Beautiful Tragedy, drew from personal darkness and blended metalcore with hard rock, while The Dream pulled things back toward cleaner, more melodic territory. The real commercial breakthrough came later: Blood cracked the Billboard 200 top 15, and Black Widow climbed even higher, debuting at number 8. Fronted by Brink and anchored by guitarist Chris Howorth, the band has carved out a sound that pulls from gothic metal, industrial rock and nu metal without sitting neatly in any one box. They kept pushing through a revolving lineup across eight studio albums, from the gothic atmosphere of Ritual to Mother in 2020 and Godmode in 2023. A Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance and a handful of Platinum and Gold certified releases confirm they are far more than a cult act.
