Incubus built their reputation the hard way, grinding through years of touring before breaking through with Make Yourself in 1999. That album shifted their sound toward something more melodic and radio friendly while keeping edges of nu metal and alternative metal intact, and it delivered the Top 10 hit "Drive" along with fan favorites like "Pardon Me" and "Stellar". The trick with "Pardon Me" is a good story: radio ignored it until Brandon Boyd and Mike Einziger played an acoustic version in person at stations, which spread the song organically until everyone wanted the studio cut. The Calabasas band kept the momentum going with Morning View and A Crow Left of the Murder, both debuting at number 2 on the Billboard 200, before Light Grenades hit number 1 in 2006. They have sold over 23 million records worldwide across a catalogue that spans funk metal, rap metal, turntablism and pop rock, a range that makes them genuinely hard to pin down. Their eighth studio album, 8, came out in April 2017.
