Intervals is essentially the brainchild of Toronto guitarist Aaron Marshall, who has kept the project alive through multiple lineup upheavals since 2011. What started as a full band quickly became something closer to a solo vehicle: after their debut album A Voice Within brought in vocalist Mike Semesky, internal disagreements led to nearly every original member walking out, leaving Marshall as the sole constant. Rather than fold, he rebuilt around collaborators like drummer Travis Orbin and bassist Cameron McLellan and pushed deeper into instrumental progressive metal territory. The Shape of Colour, The Way Forward, Circadian, and Memory Palace followed, each refining a sound built on technically intricate guitar work, djent influenced low end heaviness, and surprisingly melodic atmosphere. Their early EPs were mixed by Periphery's Adam Nolly Getgood, which gives you a decent sense of where they sit sonically.
