About

Isotope 217 came out of Chicago in 1997, pulling together members from Tortoise and the Chicago Underground Orchestra into something that felt looser and more unpredictable than either parent project. Their sound blends rock, funk, jazz and electronics into something the New York Times called 'messier and warmer than Tortoise's', which is a pretty good way to put it. The name itself is a nod to the sci fi film Forbidden Planet, which tells you something about the kind of nerdy, genre blurring energy they brought to the table. For fans of post rock who wanted something with a bit more heat and swing, Isotope 217 carved out a genuinely distinct space in the Chicago scene.
