About

Ivan Karizna is a Belarusian cellist who has built a reputation as one of the more quietly impressive voices on the classical circuit. He took bronze at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in 2011 and landed fifth at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2017, also picking up the audience prize there. Those results speak to a consistent presence at the top level of international cello playing. He has performed with major orchestras including the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra, the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg, and the National Orchestra of Porto, appearing in halls like the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Salle Pleyel in Paris, and the Philharmonie de Paris. Karizna studied at the Paris Conservatory and later at the Kronberg Academy, and he has since acquired French nationality while regularly returning to Belarus for concerts, something he considers a personal duty.
