Izaline Calister blends the calypso rhythms and musical traditions of her native Curaçao with jazz, a combination that feels genuinely hers rather than a novelty act. She sings primarily in Papiamentu, working with rhythms, ballads and dance songs she has composed or arranged herself. Her 2000 solo debut, Soño di un muhé, earned strong reviews from NRC and OOR despite being self released, and that same year Curaçao crowned her Tumba Queen. By 2004 she had caught the attention of German label Network Medien, which distributed Krioyo and Kanta Hélelé across forty countries. She picked up the Edison Award in 2009 after two nominations, and has since collaborated with artists like Lílian Vieira and Leoni Jansen on various touring projects. Her discography runs to more than ten albums, and she continues to perform at venues and festivals worldwide.
