With over 30 million albums sold in the US, Jackson Browne carved out a singular place in rock and folk rock by blending deeply personal lyrics with arrangements that stuck in your head long after the song ended. His 1977 live concept album Running on Empty is the one most people point to first: recorded on the road, it captured the restless grind of touring life and sat near the top of the charts for over a year. Before that, Late for the Sky earned him a reputation for insightful songwriting, and The Pretender broke him through to mainstream audiences. His 1980 album Hold Out became his only number 1 record in the States. Browne also made his mark writing for others well before his own career took off. Songs like "These Days" were recorded by artists ranging from Nico to the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and he co wrote "Take It Easy" with Glenn Frey, which became one of the Eagles' signature tracks. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, and Rolling Stone placed him 37th on their list of the 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time. His most recent studio album, Downhill from Everywhere, came out in 2021.
