Winning Eurovision 2016 with '1944', a song about the forced deportation of Crimean Tatars under Stalin, put Jamala in a league of her own among Ukrainian artists. The track was personal as well as political: she wrote it in 2014 after Russia's annexation of Crimea, and it drew directly on her great grandmother's experience of losing a child during that brutal resettlement. Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko awarded her the title People's Artist of Ukraine shortly after her victory, and she was nominated as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. Jamala's sound ranges across jazz, soul, neo soul, blues and art pop, and she has kept releasing music steadily since Eurovision. Her fifth studio album Kryla came out in 2018, and she returned to the Eurovision stage in 2023 to perform '1944' during the grand final's flag parade. She has also served as a judge at Vidbir, Ukraine's national Eurovision selection, since 2017. In November 2023, Russia added her to its wanted list, a move that tells you everything about the impact her music continues to carry.
