About
Jan Brokken is a Dutch author whose work spans novels, travel writing and literary non fiction. He has a gift for taking vast, almost incomprehensible events and rendering them on a human scale, which makes his storytelling unusually moving in any setting. His novel De rechtvaardigen centres on Jan Zwartendijk, the Dutch consul who saved thousands of Polish Jews from the Nazis at the start of the Second World War, reconstructing that story with the kind of careful, emotionally charged detail Brokken is known for. He regularly performs in concert settings, reading alongside live musicians. In these events his prose is paired with classical music for cello and piano, including works by Shostakovich and Ravel, and the combination gives his words an extra emotional dimension that a reading alone cannot quite match.
