Philip Glass has spent decades reshaping what classical music can sound like, building hypnotic works from repeating phrases and shifting rhythmic layers that pull listeners into a kind of trance. He founded the Philip Glass Ensemble in 1968 and went on to write 15 symphonies, 12 concertos, nine string quartets, and a string of operas that became landmarks of the form, including Einstein on the Beach, Satyagraha, and Akhnaten. His collaboration with director Robert Wilson on Einstein on the Beach is one of the defining moments of late 20th century avant garde theatre. Film composers have long envied his ability to score a scene with minimal means and maximum emotional weight. He received three Academy Award nominations for Kundun, The Hours, and Notes on a Scandal, and his scores for Koyaanisqatsi and The Truman Show have taken on a life of their own far beyond the cinema. He also brought his sound to Broadway, winning the Drama Desk Award for his music in the 2019 revival of King Lear. Few composers have moved as freely between the concert hall, the opera house, and the screen.
