Terry Riley sits at a rare crossroads where American minimalism, Indian classical raga, and modal jazz all feed into the same restless creative mind. His 1964 composition In C, built from 53 short melodic modules that performers can layer in almost any combination, upended what classical music was even supposed to look like. A year later, A Rainbow in Curved Air arrived as a solo keyboard record that felt like the future, and its influence snaked through everything from prog rock to ambient electronic music. Riley got deep into tape loop technology early, inventing his own time lag accumulator technique in Paris while working with recordings of Chet Baker's trumpet. His studies under Hindustani vocalist Pandit Pran Nath pushed his work toward just intonation and microtones, heard clearly on Shri Camel. He has composed 13 string quartets for the Kronos Quartet and regularly performs both as a raga vocalist and solo pianist.
