Steve Reich essentially rewired how Western composers think about time and repetition. A pioneer of minimalism since the mid 1960s, he built his early work around tape loops and phase shifting, layering identical recorded fragments that drift gradually out of sync with each other. The results, heard on pieces like It's Gonna Rain and Come Out, turn speech recordings into hypnotic rhythmic textures. Drumming and Music for 18 Musicians later became touchstones not just for classical composers but for rock and electronic music producers too. Reich's music also carries real political and historical weight. Come Out was built from testimony by one of the falsely accused Harlem Six, and Different Trains from 1988 drew on his Jewish heritage to confront the Holocaust. Critics like Andrew Clements have argued he is one of the few living composers who genuinely changed the direction of musical history, and given how widely his phase techniques echo through contemporary music, that claim is hard to argue with.
