Max Richter has quietly become one of the most heard composers of the modern era, with over a billion streams to his name and music that keeps turning up in cinemas, concert halls, and headphones alike. Working in postminimalist and contemporary classical styles, he weaves ambient textures and chamber strings into something that genuinely defies easy categorisation. His 2004 album The Blue Notebooks, which features Tilda Swinton reading Kafka, has been called one of the best classical works of the century, while his 2015 release Sleep holds the title of the most streamed classical record of all time. His debut Memoryhouse, recorded with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, helped open up crossover possibilities that a whole generation of composers later followed. Richter has scored more than fifty film and television projects, and his piece On the Nature of Daylight has become something of a cinematic staple. Most recently, he composed the soundtrack for the film Hamnet, earning him an Academy Award nomination in 2026.
